The Government considers a tool to ensure sustainable financing for small settlements

30.07.2023

The central government is seeking how to ensure sustainable and fair financing for small settlements. This could be done via a mechanism for redistribution of part of the municipal budgets. Mayors propose to raise a national fund of at least BGN 10 million for small settlements to apply directly to as they submit projects without any need to approach the municipal authorities. That was one of the items of the discussion between Prime Minister Acad. Nikolai Denkov and mayors of small towns and villages. Today the Prime Minister joined the meeting scheduled to hear the report of their Association at a location near Kalofer. Acad. Nikolai Denkov promised to consider the proposal with the cabinet ministers as part of the national budgeting process for 2024.

“It is very important for a statesman not to draw dividing lines that will not allow us to work together. I will work so that everyone in Bulgaria may feel better. We may have different opinions, we may have different lives but let us work together,” the Prime Minister addressed the mayors.

Acad. Nikolai Denkov also commented on the efforts to carry out a real reform within the Judiciary. “To change things in Bulgaria for the better, lawbreakers must be brought to justice quickly. Bulgaria can be a wonderful place if stealing was a bit less,” the Prime Minister said firmly. In an answer to a question, the Prime Minister disagreed with the claimed contradiction between patriotism and modern education. “We must combine our true patriotism with the education of children so that they are able to compete with the best in the world,” Acad. Nikolai Denkov explained. “Please forget the concept that whoever advocates learning modern things is not a patriot. We should be proud to be Bulgarians and we should work together to make Bulgaria a better place to live in,” the Prime Minister addressed the participants in the event.
