Prime Minister Stefan Yanev: What we do is intended to enable the State and its institutions to act in the public interest while they obey the laws and rules

26.05.2021

The good news concerning today’s cabinet meeting is that we secured the sum to pay the supplement of BGN 50 to the June pension of each Bulgarian pensioner. This is what Prime Minister Stefan Yanev stated in the presence of media after the regular cabinet meeting. The Prime Minister pointed out that what the Government does is intended to enable the State and its institutions to act in the public interest while they obey the laws and rules.

The Prime Minister said firmly that the cabinet is meeting the commitment made viz., that in its term in office it would ensure that the proper functioning of the institutions and that any move of the Government would be fully transparent for all the Bulgarian citizens to see it. In that context, Mr. Yanev emphasized that his cabinet would rely on the integrity and professionalism of all public servants to achieve the priorities that the cabinet had set.

As regards the allegations of pressure put on the government institutions, the Prime Minister commented that the cabinet’s effort is intended solely to relieve the institutions, the agencies and the whole state machinery of dependencies and subjection to party and political interests.

Today’s cabinet meeting appointed new regional governors of the regions Varna, Dobrich, Silistra and Sofia. “This meets our commitment regarding the preparations for the election and the regional governors’ involvement in the process,” Prime Minister Stefan Yanev said. The newly appointed regional governors are: Eli Todorova (Silistra Region), Vassil Karapanchev (Dobrich Region), Mitko Mihailov (Sofia Region, the capital city) and Mario Smurkov (Varna Region).

Galab Donev, Deputy Prime Minister for Economic and Social Policies and Minister of Labor and Social Policy, added that today’s cabinet meeting made an allocation of BGN 104.4 million to add BGN 50 to the June pension of all Bulgarian pensioners. Some 2,088,000 pensioners receive such Government support during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Among other matters, the Government approved a decision proposing to the President of the Republic of Bulgaria to issue a decree to dismiss the Chair of the State Agency for National Security (SANS), Dimitar Georgiev. The Council of Ministers nomination for the position was Plamen Tonchev who since 2020 had been the Director of the SANS National Security Local Directorate in Kyustendil.
