Prime Minister Nikolai Denkov signs Memorandum of Cooperation with Transparency International

A Memorandum of Cooperation was signed today between the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Bulgaria and Transparency International (TI) Bulgaria by Prime Minister Acad. Nikolai Denkov and the Executive Director of the NGO Kalin Slavov. The memorandum is an outcome of the parties’ willingness to join efforts to prevent and counter corruption and to work to bring in high good governance standards.

 

Prime Minister Acad. Nikolai Denkov welcomed the TI’s energetic stance. He was firm that while the fight against corruption draws on the effort of the government, the contribution of civil society and of the NGOs is equally important. Acad. Denkov expressed his confidence that the memorandum signed today would have added value to the cabinet’s consistent and resolute actions in the anticorruption drive.

 

For his part, Executive Director Kalin Slavov reiterated the commitment of Transparency International Bulgaria to cooperation in this challenging field. Permanent efforts are needed, he said. Kalin Slavov pointed out that the NGO’s analyses on the anticorruption situation are objective and thorough and are referred to when various investment decisions are taken or political measures are mapped out. Research is a function of the condition of the Judiciary and the rule of law, the political developments and the economic situation, Kalin Slavov said further.

 

Premising on the Memorandum signed today, the parties will have the opportunity to transfer know-how in the implementation of practical tools for good governance, including such as devised within the OECD. These can be internationally recognized standards in the field of good governance, the guidelines drawn up within the OECD in addition to systems to evaluate the quality of governance, mechanisms of transparency in the work with public funds. The interaction process will further help to take practical steps and to provide timely information about European and global developments.
