Prime Minister Kiril Petkov talks with Russia’s Ambassador in Sofia Eleonora Mitrofanova

06.03.2022

Today, Prime Minister Kiril Petkov invited H. E. Mrs. Eleonora Mitrofanova, Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Bulgaria for a discussion. Bulgaria’s Prime Minister appealed to the senior Russian diplomat to abide by the generally accepted standards of diplomatic communication and requested that she show the due respect and refrain from offensive name-calling against Bulgarian institutions. Ambassador Mitrofanova apologized to the Prime Minister.

The Prime Minister expressed his indignation that the Russian Embassy’s official greetings on the occasion of the National Day, March 3rd, likened the war in Ukraine to the Liberation of Bulgaria. “Our gratitude to the Russian people for the Liberation cannot be degraded by comparisons to today’s fratricidal war in Ukraine,” he stressed. Mr. Petkov insisted that the Embassy of the Russian Federation should not interfere in Bulgaria’s domestic policy, in line with international conventions. The Prime Minister welcomed the Russian Ambassador’s declared intention to stick to a constructive tone from henceforth. He appealed to end the war and to resume dialog.
