Prime Minister Kiril Petkov meets EU institutions presidents in Brussels

Today Prime Minister Kiril Petkov had working meetings with the President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola, the President of the European Council Charles Michel and the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen. Also, the Prime Minister attended the commemoration of the International Holocaust Remembrance Day in the European Parliament.

 

The Prime Minister congratulated Roberta Metsola on her election as the President of the EP and reiterated his desire for close and fruitful cooperation. The Prime Minister and the EP President discussed the Bulgarian Government’s priorities and confronting challenges in the implementation of its ambitious program. Kiril Petkov stressed that accession to Schengen continues to be the country’s strategic goal and that the country counts on the EP’s continued support.

 

The President of the European Council Charles Michel congratulated the Bulgarian Prime Minister on the successful meetings with the Government of the Republic of North Macedonia as well as on the measures to strengthen Bulgaria’s capabilities given the tensions between NATO and Russia. President Michel assured the Prime Minister that the EU institutions work to eliminate energy risks for the member states, Bulgaria included. The President and the Prime Minister agreed to stay in close contact in the coming days and weeks.

 

The Prime Minister also met with the President of the European Commission. Kiril Petkov and Ursula von der Leyen discussed the progress on the national Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP) and the situation on the border with Ukraine.

 

Within his visit to Brussels Kiril Petkov spoke with the President of Renew Europe Stéphane Séjourné and with the Co-Presidents of the Greens/EFA (European Free Alliance) Ska Keller and Philippe Lamberts.
