Prime Minister Kiril Petkov: No plans to impose COVID restrictions; Bulgarians may enjoy a trouble-free summer season

14.07.2022

The Bulgarians may enjoy a trouble-free summer season, as the COVID figures show. This is what Prime Minister Kiril Petkov said at a briefing in the Council of Ministers following his meeting with the Chief State Health Inspector Angel Kunchev and health officials. The Prime Minister pointed out that there are no plans to enforce lockdown measures. COVID certificates are not required anywhere in the country. Nor are movement restrictions considered. We continue to monitor the situation with great attention, the Prime Minister said further.

Prime Minister Kiril Petkov noted that the plan to deal with the pandemic will be updated in line with the amendment to the Health Act, as it is important that there is clear predictability for everyone. According to the plan, there are 6 phases that are determined on the basis of the number of inpatients who are treated in hospitals and in intensive care wards and are based on general epidemic benchmarks. Currently, most of Bulgaria is positioned in Phase Zero but for some regions that stay in Phase One.

The Chief State Health Inspector Angel Kunchev said that the rise of the incidence rate as observed is far from the peaks a few months ago. Angel Kunchev pointed out that the current situation is much more different when compared to the two preceding years. The main reason for this is that the characteristics of this virus variant are different: the virus spreads more easily and faster but does not lead to a sizeable increase of the number of inpatients. Besides, the preparedness of the healthcare institutions and of the healthcare system as a whole is significantly better, with sufficient supply of vaccines and antivirals. Given these circumstances, I do not expect any dramatic changes; we act as per the plan, Angel Kunchev said in conclusion.
