The Interconnector Greece-Bulgaria (IGB) gives Bulgaria real energy diversification. The statement was made by Prime Minister Kiril Petkov who, at the invitation of his Greek counterpart Kyriakos Mitsotakis, attended the inauguration of the IGB natural gas pipeline. Kiril Petkov pointed out that it is for the first time that Bulgaria will have land recourse to alternative sources of gas other than Russian. The gas interconnector will transform the energy map of Europe, Bulgaria’s Prime Minister said further.

I am proud to head a government that within six months was able to complete the project that was talked about for many years, the Prime Minister said. Kiril Petkov thanked the Prime Minister of Greece for his dedicated political support and close cooperation. We have demonstrated that when we have a goal and a mission and real leadership on both sides of the border, we can achieve also with friends who are not far away, in Azerbaijan, Kiril Petkov said further.

Prime Minister Kiril Petkov noted that this day would go down in the annals of the Bulgarian-Greek bilateral relations as a symbol of our aspiration for political, economic and energy independence and of our values and our geopolitical choice, Bulgaria’s Prime Minister pointed out.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said that the project boosts the common European goal of energy diversification. He specifically recognized the role of Bulgaria’s Prime Minister Kiril Petkov in the speedier completion of the IGB project. As the Greek Prime Minister said, the implementation of the project sends a strong message to the region about the importance of solidarity and cooperation in the Balkans. Moreover, Kyriakos Mitsotakis underscored the friendly relations between Bulgaria and Greece.
