Prime Minister Kiril Petkov: Bulgaria’s Government strongly condemns the aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine

24.02.2022

Bulgaria’s Government strongly condemns the aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine, said Prime Minister Petkov after the cabinet’s closed sitting devoted to the situation in Ukraine. The military aggression has not been provoked by Ukraine.

It is unacceptable for us to stand hostilities on such a serious scale in Europe in the 21st century, he stressed. Today the Prime Minister will attend a special European Council meeting starting at 8.00 PM in Brussels where the member states’ leaders will agree on a common response and broader sanctions against Russia.

Bulgaria will speak in one voice with all EU and NATO partners; our unity is our strength, Kiril Petkov stressed.

Currently there is no threat to Bulgaria but nonetheless, the Bulgarian Government has drawn up an action plan to ensure energy security, cyber security, stocktaking of supplies and other measures. Bulgarian citizens may rest assured that we operate very actively, the Prime Minister said.

Three checkpoints are being opened at this very moment for Bulgarians fleeing Ukraine. So far, some 200 people have expressed a desire to do so. The Bulgarian Government provides land transport and clear procedures for the rapid transportation to the country of Bulgarians and Ukrainians who wish it.
