01.10.2022

The accession to Schengen and to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) were some of the major items on the agenda as discussed at the meeting between Prime Minister Galab Donev and Romania’s Prime Minister Nicolae-Ionel Ciucă. It was noted in the course of their discussion that these are priority issues for both Bulgaria and Romania and that there exists a common interest for the countries to deepen their cooperation on them.

Regarding Schengen, Prime Minister Galab Donev pointed out the benefits of lifting internal border control that would speed up the movement of goods and people between the two countries while he stressed that the OECD membership of Bulgaria and Romania would have a positive impact on the region of South East Europe and would guarantee adherence to the OECD’s highest standards and to good practices in the region.

The strengthening of the transport connectivity between the two countries was another important focus in the discussion of Prime Minister Galab Donev with his Romanian counterpart. In the view of Mr. Donev, the construction of new bridges over the Danube River and the operation of ferry links would facilitate the cross-border traffic between Bulgaria and Romania. Regarding this, Bulgaria’s Prime Minister welcomed the progress made in the negotiations between the two countries’ ministries of transport on the construction of a third bridge near Rousse-Giurgiu, as well as on the other connectivity-related issues.

Prime Minister Galab Donev also pointed out that Romania is among Bulgaria’s leading business partners and that there exists a solid potential for deeper economic cooperation, including the travel and tourism industry, the transportation and the energy sector.
