PRIME MINISTER BORISSOV MET WITH EUROPEAN COMMISSIONER MARIYA GABRIEL

At the Council of Ministers, Prime Minister Boyko Borissov met with the European Commissioner Mariya Gabriel, whose candidature was voted with a huge majority in favor in the European Parliament in the beginning of the month. Prime Minister Borissov congratulated Gabriel and wished her successful work at the responsible post. According to him, as a European Commissioner she has the opportunity to achieve considerable results in the field she is responsible for – digital economy and digital society, so as to provide concrete benefits for the European citizens. The Prime Minister noted the good communication with the European Commission and expressed confidence that Mariya Gabriel will maintain an active dialogue with the Bulgarian institutions.

A highlight of the meeting was the upcoming Bulgarian Presidency of the Council of the EU in 2018. According to the European Commissioner, the main prerequisites for its successful conduction are in place, such as the identification of clear priorities and the preparatory meetings with the chairpersons of the parliamentary committees and rapporteurs. Prime Minister Borissov and Gabriel agreed that the Presidency is an opportunity for our country to play an active role as mediator among the institutions and to have a positive impact on topics of importance for Europe.

Boyko Borissov paid special attention to the Western Balkans. He shared that he is an optimist after his meeting with the leaders of the Berlin Process in Trieste and after the talks that were held yesterday in Thessaloniki. The Prime Minister underlined that it is extremely important to have a clear European perspective for the region.
