We want to make Bulgaria a normal European country. The whole government works towards that goal. We have made great progress within just four months. With these words, Prime Minister Acad. Nikolai Denkov addressed members of the monitoring group of the European Parliament’s Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE).
The Prime Minister stressed that the Bulgarian government’s main goals are the country’s accession to Schengen, to the Eurozone and to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). A lot of effort has been put into this. Acad. Nikolai Denkov recalled that recently the European Commission lifted the monitoring on Bulgaria and Romania under the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism (CVM). “This sends a clear signal about the success of reforms that our country has carried out in the field of the rule of law,” the Prime Minister pointed out. He noted the contribution made to this process by respected institutions such as the Basel Institute, the European Commission and the Venice Commission.
Acad. Nikolai Denkov is optimistic that amendments to the Constitution to give the Judiciary greater independence will be approved by the end of the year.
The LIBE delegation led by the Member of the European Parliament (MEP) Sophia in’ t Veld is in Bulgaria to meet with officials from different institutions on the subject of the rule of law, the fight against corruption and media freedom.
