19.10.2020

“The Three Seas Initiative is making very fast progress in political and economic terms owing to US support and member states’ enthusiasm. This shows that there exists political will to improve the conditions for the development of the countries of the region.” This is what Prime Minister Boyko Borissov stated when he spoke over phone with US Under Secretary for Economic Growth, Energy and the Environment Keith Krach.

The Prime Minister recalled that in the previous month the Bulgarian Government approved a decision to contribute EUR 20 million to the Three Seas Initiative Investment Fund (3SIIF) and appointed a national coordinator. “It is our desire to boost the economic prosperity not only in the countries between the Baltic, Adriatic and Black Sea but also across Europe and, given the current situation, to alleviate the serious economic, financial and health problems as caused by the Covid-19 pandemic,” Boyko Borissov pointed out.

During their discussion, Bulgaria’s Prime Minister Boyko Borissov and US Under Secretary Keith Krach agreed unanimously on the need to strengthen active bilateral energy cooperation. In June 2020, the US proposed the signing of a bilateral Memorandum of Understanding concerning strategic civil nuclear cooperation. “For Bulgaria nuclear energy plays a major role in ensuring the national, regional and European energy security while providing affordable energy and is a key element in the transition to a low-carbon economy,” Bulgaria’s Prime Minister Borissov stressed.

Prime Minister Borissov and Under Secretary Krach discussed the possibility to strengthen cooperation in 5G security. In January 2020, the European Commission released a document containing firm and far-reaching measures to enable a coordinated EU approach to the 5G networks. The European Union, the United States and NATO cooperate in this matter, the aim being to find optimum solutions given its importance in the context of connectivity and security.
