01.04.2020

Prime Minister Boyko Borissov had a telephone conversation with US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo over the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. The two discussed the measures each side has taken to curb the virus.

Prime Minister Boyko Borissov presented to Pompeo the successful reorganization of the Bulgarian industry, which has been producing protective clothing, helmets, goggles and masks for weeks now. The Bulgarian Prime Minister also put an emphasis on the package of socio-economic measures adopted by the government to support employers and workers. He told Pompeo that our country is working hard to preserve the employment of every citizen. "With the passage of the pandemic, Bulgaria, Europe and the US, who share the same democratic values and citizens' freedoms, together as strategic partners, will pull their countries out of the economic crisis as a result of the coronavirus," Michael Pompeo said during the telephone conversation.

Prime Minister Borissov and Secretary of State Pompeo also exchanged opinion on medicines, medical supplies and diagnostic tests for COVID-19. The conversation revealed that scientists and specialists from the United States are developing a vaccine for the virus and Bulgaria will be among the first countries to receive it. Bulgarian Prime Minister Borissov has requested PCR test kits.

Boyko Borissov and Michael Pompeo agreed that all countries have a duty to continue fighting the pandemic through mutual assistance and close cooperation in the exchange of successful treatment practices. "Each country has its own experience and knowledge, but if we share effective measures together we will be able to deal with the pandemic faster," said Prime Minister Borissov.
