PRIME MINISTER BOYKO BORISSOV TALKED WITH THE TURKISH PRESIDENT RECEP TAYYIP ERDOĞAN

Prime Minister Boyko Borissov had a telephone conversation with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The two of them discussed the situation in Syria and the situation with the migrants. During the conversation it was clarified that there is currently no direct threat to Bulgaria. Prime Minister Borissov and President Erdoğan have agreed to hold a meeting on Monday.

 

Prime Minister Borissov noted that our country highly appreciates Turkey's contribution to the issue of migration and we are being understanding of the huge difficulties that our neighbor has been experiencing for years. Prime Minister Borissov was certain that in this situation, neither Turkey nor any other country should be left alone – support should be given. The Prime Minister of Bulgaria expressed his confidence that Bulgaria and Turkey will continue to work together in the interest of dealing with the crisis in Syria and halting migrant flow and pressure. The Bulgarian Prime Minister expressed his deep condolences for the dead Turkish soldiers in the Syrian Governorate of Idlib. Prime Minister Borissov underlined that the crisis in Syria only has a peaceful political solution.

 

Prime Minister Boyko Borissov identified the implementation of the EU-Turkey agreement as key. According to the Bulgarian Prime Minister, it is of the utmost importance that the European Union has a united position on the migrant issue. Borissov said he would inform EC President Ursula von der Leyen, European Council President Charles Michel and EU leaders about the conversation with President Erdoğan and will urge the EU to take the diplomatic solution of the crisis even more seriously.
