PRIME MINISTER BOYKO BORISSOV TALKED WITH THE GERMAN CHANCELLOR ANGELA MERKEL

27.03.2020

"The coronavirus pandemic is an unprecedented challenge. It is impossible to overcome it in a highly integrated European Union with a single market and interaction between the Member States without coordinated and joint efforts."

This is what Prime Minister Boyko Borissov said during a telephone conversation he had with German Chancellor Angela Merkel. They discussed the current situation regarding the spread of COVID-19 and the measures that have proven effective in limiting it.

Germany is interested in the successful reorganization of the textile industry in our country, which is already producing protective clothing and equipment for the needs of Bulgarian doctors, nurses, laboratory assistants and all employees directly involved in the fight against the coronavirus. Chancellor Merkel welcomed the efforts made by Prime Minister Borissov's government and the industry. In the course of the conversation the topic, mentioned earlier about the delivery of protective equipment from Bulgaria to Germany, when our country meets the needs of its population and has the capacity to assist other European citizens, was further discussed.

Prime Minister Borissov and Chancellor Merkel also discussed the successfully developed rapid coronavirus test by a leading German konzern. Within two hours, the new test shows with certainty whether a patient is infected with COVID-19 or has had the disease. Prime Minister Boyko Borissov emphasised that our country is ready to immediately buy quantities of the diagnostic tool once the German company starts delivering to the European market.

"We must do everything we can to protect our citizens and overcome the crisis. At this difficult time, we rely on the sense of responsibility and solidarity of each member of the European family" Prime Minister Boyko Borissov said during the telephone conversation with Chancellor Merkel. The Bulgarian Prime Minister identified as vital the constant exchange of experience and up-to-date information between the Member States with the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control, as well as the communication in the framework of the Health Security Committee. "In parallel with operational actions, we must not stop working on measures at the European level to mitigate the socio-economic impact of the pandemic. We will need a very strong response in this direction. But together we will manage to overcome this too," Prime Minister Borissov told Angela Merkel.
