PRIME MINISTER BOYKO BORISSOV TALKED WITH IMF MANAGING DIRECTOR KRISTALINA GEORGIEVA

Prime Minister Boyko Borissov had a telephone conversation with the Managing Director and Chairwoman of the Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Kristalina Georgieva. The two discussed the worldwide coronavirus pandemic and the steps being taken to tackle the crisis and reduce its negative effects. Kristalina Georgieva noted that Bulgaria has responded in time and has taken adequate measures to deal with the situation, which can be serve as a good example.

 

Prime Minister Boyko Borissov and IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva agreed that no one can predict at this time how long the crisis will last, and that is why governments need to work purposefully to protect human health and life, and to curb the economic damage.

 

Prime Minister Borissov noted the prudent fiscal policy that the Bulgarian government has pursued in recent years. In his words, Bulgaria's good condition immediately before the epidemic allows for more flexibility in the current crisis and a number of socio-economic measures to support citizens and businesses. The Prime Minister also pointed out the mobilization of the state to protect people battling on the frontline with the coronavirus.

 

During the conversation, Kristalina Georgieva put an emphasis on the IMF's readiness to assist the countries affected by the coronavirus. She said that it was important for governments to take adequate and coordinated measures so that recovery from the crisis could begin as soon as possible. Deputy Prime Minister Tomislav Donchev, Finance Minister Vladislav Goranov, Economy Minister Emil Karanikolov and Labor and Social Policy Minister Denitsa Sacheva also took part in the telephone conversation between Prime Minister Borissov and the IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva.
