01.12.2017

The stable and sustainable development of the relations between Bulgaria and Turkey is a priority for the Bulgarian foreign policy. This was confirmed during the meeting between Prime Minister Boyko Borissov and the Turkish Minister for EU Affairs and Chief Negotiator Omer Celik. It was stated that the relations between the two countries are based on the principles of good neighborliness, mutual respect, and non-interference in internal affairs.

During the conversation, Boyko Borissov underlined that Turkey is Bulgaria's immediate neighbor, a NATO ally and an important partner in areas, such as migration, the fight against terrorism, energy, agriculture, and trade. “The active and constructive dialogue on various levels in the recent months has contributed to the creation of a positive atmosphere in the bilateral relations,” said the Bulgarian Prime Minister.

Boyko Borissov and Omer Celik praised the efforts of both countries to tackle the migration flow, taking into account the positive effect of the EU-Turkey Agreement on migration, which has resulted in a real drop in the number of illegal migrants entering the EU.

The Bulgarian Prime Minister and the Turkish Minister also noted the intense economic cooperation between the two countries and agreed that there are even more opportunities for developing the bilateral ties in the energy sector and energy infrastructure, in investment, livestock, transport, and tourism.
