PRIME MINISTER BOYKO BORISSOV SPOKE WITH THE PRESIDENT OF THE EUROPEAN COUNCIL DONALD TUSK

Prime Minister Boyko Borissov and the President of the European Council Donald Tusk discussed the priorities of the Bulgarian Presidency of the Council of the European Union in 2018 and the upcoming summit on the topic of the “Western Balkans” in May in Sofia. The two met in Brussels before the session of the European Council.

 

The Bulgarian Prime Minister pointed out that our country is seriously preparing for its first presidency, also in cooperation with the other countries from the Troika. We work actively with Estonia to achieve maximum continuity in the open dossiers, Borissov said and underlined that during its presidency, Bulgaria will seek balance and consensus on the current topics for the European Union.

 

Boyko Borissov and Donald Tusk also discussed the organization of the summit in May 2018 in Sofia that will be co-hosted by the two of them.  The topic of the Western Balkans is important not only for the states of the region, but also for the entire European Union, in the shared opinion of Borissov and Tusk. According to them, the Bulgarian Presidency creates a conducive environment for a constructive debate on the European perspective for the Western Balkan states, the guarantee of the economic development of the region, its transport, energy, infrastructural, and digital connectedness with the European Union.

 

The President of the European Council expressed his support for the fulfillment of the priorities of the Bulgarian Presidency. “I expect that the Bulgarian Presidency and the upcoming summit in Sofia will provide your country with the opportunity to play a constructive role in overcoming the challenges on the European agenda,” highlighted Donald Tusk and pointed out that he will rely on the Bulgarian government as a stable partner for the unity of the region.
