09.11.2020

Prime Minister Boyko Borissov spoke over phone with the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen.

The two leaders’ discussion focused on the importance of the Berlin Process Summit to be co-hosted by Bulgaria’s Prime Minister and by the Prime Minister of the Republic of North Macedonia Zoran Zaev. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the event is in VTC format.

The President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen reassured the Bulgarian Prime Minister that she would join the meeting of the leaders of the Berlin Process member countries. The meeting is the closing event on the schedule of this year’s Joint Chairmanship of the Berlin Process by the Republic of Bulgaria and the Republic of North Macedonia.

“Bulgaria assumed the responsibility to co-chair the Berlin Process this year as a natural follow-up of the national effort during the preparation and the performance of the Bulgarian Presidency of the Council of the EU that put the integration processes of the countries of the Western Balkans high on the European agenda,” Prime Minister Borissov underlined to the President of the European Commission. Bulgaria’s Prime Minister noted that the European perspective for the Western Balkans stands for stability, peace and prosperity in the region.

In this context, important documents to be signed at the Summit aim at the further alignment of the region to EU rules and standards.
