PRIME MINISTER BOYKO BORISSOV SPEAKS OVER PHONE WITH ALBANIA’S PRIME MINISTER EDI RAMA

19.11.2020

Prime Minister Boyko Borissov spoke over phone with Albania’s Prime Minister Edi Rama. The discussion focused on Bulgaria’s position on the negotiating framework for the accession of Albania and the Republic of North Macedonia (RNM) to the European Union.

“Bulgaria firmly supports Albania in its march to the European family. We believe that you have demonstrated your commitment to European values and responsibility and inspiration to move forward and have our support,” said Prime Minister Borissov to his counterpart.

Further Prime Minister Borissov noted that Bulgaria is one of the strongest advocates of the EU enlargement process and therefore put the issue high on the European agenda during the Bulgarian Presidency of the Council of the EU in 2018. “This is because the European perspective is the strongest motivation for the transition to democratic governance and market economy in the Western Balkans,” Mr. Borissov added.

Regarding the European integration of the Republic of North Macedonia, Mr. Borissov pointed out Bulgaria’s position and underlined that Bulgaria is one of the countries that most firmly insisted and wished that the RNM should join the EU. In this context, Bulgaria’s efforts have been invariably focused on reaching a consensus on the issues that are important to both countries. “Unfortunately, such commitment is not visibly demonstrated by the Republic of North Macedonia. We stand ready to continue the talks and energetically work to translate the Neighborhood Agreement into reality,” said Mr. Borissov to Albania’s Prime Minister.
