21.01.2020

Prime Minister Boyko Borissov met with the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev. The two spoke at the Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos.

Prime Minister Borissov noted that the cooperation between Bulgaria and Azerbaijan has reached a strategic level in the field of energy in recent years. "Our common priority is to diversify sources and routes and to ensure security of energy supply for Europe," said the Bulgarian Prime Minister. Borissov added that Bulgaria has always supported the construction of the Southern Gas Corridor, an integral part of the project also being the Greece-Bulgaria interconnector, through which our country will receive Azerbaijani natural gas. In this regard, Prime Minister Borissov informed President Aliyev about the progress on the gas pipeline between Greece and Bulgaria, which is expected to be ready by the end of the year.

As a continuation of the talks from last year in Azerbaijan, the two discussed the possibility of Azeri oil company SOCAR to start investing in Bulgaria's gas distribution system in urban areas - with two goals - air cleanliness and competitiveness. Prime Minister Borissov expressed his expectation that the Azerbaijani side would soon inform us about the official results of the research on the gas sector in our country, which they have entrusted with their subsequent actions. The Bulgarian Prime Minister expressed optimism about SOCAR's ability to start investments in the distribution of gas in our country.

Borisov and Aliyev agreed that the joint work of the two countries in the field of energy will continue in order to guarantee the supply of natural gas to the region of the EU at competitive prices.
