24.01.2020

Prime Minister Boyko Borissov met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ekaterina Zaharieva was also present at the meeting in the Council of Ministers.

During the talks, satisfaction with the good political, economic and cultural relations was expressed in the context of the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Bulgaria and Cyprus. Prime Minister Borissov noted that the cooperation between the two countries benefits both nations and needs to be further developed. "We are extremely pleased with the results in a number of areas that we have achieved in recent years. Bulgaria and Cyprus are two extremely friendly countries, "said the Bulgarian Prime Minister.

The bilateral partnership in the area of energy was also discussed during the meeting. Prime Minister Boyko Borissov pointed out that the implementation of the Greece-Bulgaria gas interconnector (IGB) is of a particular importance as an input structure for the import of gas from alternative sources for the whole region of Southeast Europe. The Greece-Bulgaria interconnector will connect the North-South gas corridor to the Southern gas corridor and will allow gas to be imported from the LNG terminal of Alexadroupolis, Greece and the planned Eastern Mediterranean gas pipeline. "In this regard, we consider the strategic energy partnership on the Israeli-Cyprus-Greece axis as perspective," the Bulgarian Prime Minister also added in front of the Cypriot Minister.

Prime Minister Borissov also emphasised the importance of the agreement between Israel, Cyprus and Greece on the construction of the EastMed gas pipeline. "This is an extremely large-scale energy and infrastructure project that is of a great geopolitical importance for the development of the region and Europe," said Prime Minister Boyko Borissov.
