PRIME MINISTER BOYKO BORISSOV MET WITH THE DEPUTY ASSISTANT STATE SECRETARY OF THE US FOR EUROPE AND EURASIA HOYT YEE

The processes in the countries of the Western Balkans were among the topics discussed during the meeting of Prime Minister Boyko Borissov with the Deputy Assistant State Secretary of the US for Europe and Eurasia Hoyt Yee. Prime Minister Borissov highlighted the importance of the European perspective for the countries from the region. He underlined that their accession to the European Union will be one of the priorities of our country when it takes over the Presidency of the Council of the EU in 2018.

During the conversation at the Council of Ministers, Borissov discussed with Hoyt Yee the results of his participation at the meeting of the leaders from the Berlin Process in Trieste.

The Prime Minister put a focus on the possibilities for connectivity among the countries from the Western Balkans and those from the EU with the inclusion of Corridor Nr. 8 in the Berlin Process. Connecting infrastructure is important, it will provide a new perspective for the development of the Balkans, said the Prime Minister.

The progress on the interconnector between Bulgaria and Greece was also discussed. The Prime Minister clarified that this project is of key importance not only for the two countries but also for the region of South East Europe and the EU. With its implementation diversification of sources and routes for delivery of natural gas will be achieved for the South Gas Corridor. During the conversation, the development of the project for the building of the European gas hub “Balkan” was also noted.

Prime Minister Boyko Borissov and Deputy Assistant State Secretary Hoyt Yee discussed also the strengthening of the bilateral partnership between Bulgaria and the US to the interest of the common goals of both states as allies. A highlight was put on the cooperation in the field of security and defence.

Deputy Prime Ministers Tomislav Dontchev and Ekaterina Zaharieva attended the meeting.
