21.02.2020

"The European Union needs a more ambitious budget, and this is what I have defended. And the new four absolutely agreed with me - both the Dutch prime minister, the Swedish, the Danish, and the Austrian. I have given them 10 points, which they can argue for Bulgaria specifically, because we have to have a good budget."

This is what Prime Minister Boyko Borissov said after the end of the second day of the extraordinary session of the European Council.

The Prime Minister emphasised that during the negotiations on the new EU budget he focused on the sustainable development of Bulgaria, its financial discipline, economic growth, the lowest foreign debt along with Estonia's, as well as zero migration, energy diversification, taking into account the interconnectors with Greece, the Balkan Stream. "We are also a NATO country, the commitments with NATO, the bases we have, the joint trainings - all this geostrategic factors are extremely important to be accepted for Bulgaria," Prime Minister Borissov noted.

"A huge amount of work done by Charles Michel, a huge amount of work of Ursula von der Leyen, but in the end they gave us changes, new frameworks, that we cannot in any way understand, to vote on," said Prime Minister Boyko Borissov. He added that, even with another sleepless night for EU leaders, this is not responsible for the Union’s budget for the next 7 years. The Bulgarian Prime Minister added that the negotiations were continuing at expert level.
