PRIME MINISTER BOYKO BORISSOV IN BRUSSELS: I WANT A NATIONAL CONSENSUS REGARDING THE EURO AND FOR ALL PEOPLE TO UNDERSTAND THAT THIS IS FOR THE GOOD OF THE COUNTRY

20.02.2020

We should be very cautious when discussing the financial framework, because EUR 60 billion smaller budget means difficult negotiations, Prime Minister Boyko Borissov told media before the start of the European Council. EU Heads of State or Government will discuss the Multiannual Financial Framework 2021-2027 during an extraordinary meeting in Brussels.

Prime Minister Borissov put an emphasis on the cohesion and common agricultural policy, which are important for Bulgaria. The Prime Minister added that it is also important for our country to maintain the n+3 rule, which also relates to co-financing, by giving as an example infrastructure projects. "In our procedures, we have thousands of appeals, these are the rules, we cannot begin working in two years, especially for large infrastructure projects, let alone finish them," Prime Minister Borissov argued. According to him, if the deadlines are reduced, states will not be able to succeed and will have to return money.

"I'm prepared to be dialogical. It will be an ongoing dialogue for compromises," Prime Minister Boyko Borissov said. He voiced his support for traditional European policies, while stating that in order to be competitive with the US and China, the EU also needs funding for innovation and new technologies. The Bulgarian Prime Minister also highlighted the EU's new ambitions in cybersecurity, the common European defense, including the Green Deal.

Asked by the media about the euro area, Prime Minister Boyko Borissov outlined the advantages for our country. "I want a national consensus and for all people to understand that this is for the good of the state," the Prime Minister said. "We, as a country, have signed a treaty with the EU where we have pledged to adopt the euro. Such a decision should not be made from one single person, one minister and one party, if you will, because it will have an effect for decades. So we're just slowing down a little bit, "Borissov added.
