PRIME MINISTER BOYKO BORISSOV HELD A TELEPHONE CONVERSATION WITH THE SECRETARY-GENERAL OF THE UN ANTÓNIO GUTERRES

Prime Minister Boyko Borissov expressed his full support for the ambition of the Secretary-General of the UN António Guterres for the European Union to become a leader in the process of achieving climate neutrality levels of harmful emissions until 2050. During a telephone conversation between the two, following a request from the Secretary-General of the UN, Guterres thanked Prime Minister Borissov for his personal engagement regarding the questions for protection of the environment, and for the fact that the Bulgarian government is upholding the commitments of the Paris Climate Agreement.

 Guterres invited Prime Minister Borissov to take part in the organized by him Climate Action Summit, which will be held during the ministerial week in the context of the opening of the 74th session of the General Assembly of the UN. The main goal of the forum is to give a new stimulus and to strengthen the implementation of the commitments, undertaken under the Paris Climate Agreement to stop the growth of the amount of harmful emissions in the atmosphere and to achieve climate neutrality levels of harmful emissions. The Secretary-General of the UN expressed his hope that during the upcoming forum in New York Prime Minister Borissov will share his governmental experience regarding the priorities in the area of climate and environment protection.

Prime Minister Boyko Borissov said that he would express his support for the initiative of the Secretary-General of the UN during the upcoming meeting of the European Council. As a part of the Paris Climate Agreement and a member-state of the European Union, Bulgaria will support the undertaken commitments on national and European level, also noted Borissov. The Prime Minister pointed out that our state is exceeding the commitment to increase the share of renewable energy used, reaching 18,8% and thus taking a leading place in the EU.

Climate change is not an abstraction, but a fact, said Prime Minister Borissov and added that this is the biggest challenge for the world now and for the future. The Prime Minister was certain that it is vital that the efforts for protecting the environment should continue to be made.
