PRIME MINISTER BOYKO BORISSOV HAS ARRIVED IN EGYPT

14.01.2020

Prime Minister Boyko Borissov has arrived in Egypt, where tomorrow, at the invitation of President Abdel Fattah As-Sisi, he will participate in the official inauguration of the new Berenice Naval Base on the coast of the Red Sea.

At the airport in Cairo, Prime Minister Borissov was greeted by Egyptian Parliamentary Affairs Minister Alaa Fouad.

The Berenice base is a strategic point in securing the country's southern flank. Berenice is one of three new naval bases on the coasts of the Mediterranean and the Red Sea, the creation of which Egypt announced in 2017. Along with other naval bases in the country, Egypt's military leadership is allowed for the first time to set up two navies: one in the Mediterranean region and the second in the Red Sea, which represents a qualitative new development for the Egyptian armed forces.

During his visit to Egypt, Prime Minister Boyko Borissov will meet with President Abdel Fattah As-Sisi. The focus of their talks will be the bilateral cooperation in the political, economic, cultural, educational, and energy fields. Emphasis will also be placed on the support Bulgaria will continue to provide to Egypt in its efforts in the fight against terrorism and religious extremism.

The development of the bilateral cooperation in this area is in the interest of both Bulgaria and Egypt and will contribute to the security in the regions of the Middle East and the Balkans.

The first meeting between the Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borissov and the Egyptian President Abdel Fattah As-Sisi took place on the sidelines of the 73rd annual UN General Assembly session in September 2018, where the two leaders agreed on the practical activation of the partnership.

As a result of the goodwill for cooperation declared on both sides, on October 23-24, 2018, Prime Minister Boyko Borissov paid a two-day visit to Cairo. And on February 24-25, 2019, the Prime Minister of Bulgaria participated in the first ever high-level forum between the EU and the League of Arab States at the Egyptian resort of Sharm El-Sheikh, where he also spoke with Egyptian President Sisi. At the meeting back then, the will to develop the bilateral relations was confirmed.
