There is a broad political consensus in Bulgaria regarding the signing of the Agreement for Friendship, Good Neighborly Relations, and Cooperation with the Republic of Macedonia. An unequivocal expression of the desire to open a new page in the relations between the two countries is the categorical support of the Parliament, stated in the declaration adopted with unanimity by the deputies on 27 July this year. This was said by Prime Minister Boyko Borissov at his meeting with the Speaker of the Assembly of the Republic of Macedonia Talat Dzaferi.
The Prime Minister pointed out that the Agreement for Friendship, Good Neighborly Relations, and Cooperation that was signed today will be the foundation for long-lasting and sustainable building of friendly and good neighborly relations. He expressed expectations that the document, which provides prospects for cooperation based on European values, will be regarded as a priority and ratified by the parliaments of the two countries.
“After the ratification of the Agreement, we expect concrete steps for its implementation that will show in practice, both to the citizens of our countries and our European partners, the presence of willingness for upgrading our relations on a new foundation,” said the Bulgarian Prime Minister and underlined that the Parliament is the institution that can suggest working solutions.
“The Agreement is a good basis for good neighborly relations between the two countries. The difference in all respects between EU member states and other countries is visible. We sincerely support your accession to the EU and NATO,” noted Prime Minister Borissov. During the meeting, he thanked for the invitation for a visit by the Speaker of the National Assembly of Bulgaria Dimitar Glavchev to the Republic of Macedonia.
The Prime Minister pointed out that in Europe the signing of the Agreement is also welcomed. According to him, the document opens new opportunities for our countries in respect to the business, the economy, and infrastructure development.
“There are critics everywhere. But the truth is that if we build Corridor 8, connecting it to the Danube and the Black Sea strategies, we will open our region in all directions,” added Prime Minister Borissov.
