07.08.2017

Prime Minister Boyko Borissov held a phone conversation with the Commissioner for Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Karmenu Vella. The two discussed the case of “Kaliakra”.

Prime Minister Borissov informed Commissioner Vella about the development of the situation in Bulgaria after the Ordinance by Minister Neno Dimov was issued. The two agreed that the decision by the Court of the European Union should be implemented. It was noted that the Bulgarian authorities should identify the appropriate measures and methods to do that, those being the subject of approval by the European Commission. It was underlined that European law in the field of “Natura 2000” does not forbid economic activities including agriculture, and alternatives will be sought for the implementation of the decision in a way that will not be to the detriment of people in the region of seaside Dobrudzha.

The European Commission and the Bulgarian government are in good dialogue on the issue and make efforts to find the optimal compromise for protecting both the nature and the interests of the people in this part of Bulgaria, was noted during the conversation.

Commissioner Vella welcomed the efforts of the Prime Minister to gather all stakeholders in quest of a solution. He also noted the efforts of and the good cooperation with Minister Dimov.

Prime Minister Borissov invited Commissioner Karmenu Vella together with the Commissioner for Regional Policy Corina Cretu to visit Bulgaria and explore on the spot the measures that have been taken in the protected areas.
