29.09.2017

Bulgaria is not a risk to the Eurozone and deserves to be in the “waiting room”, because it has fulfilled all criteria for it. This was highlighted by the Prime Minister Boyko Borissov at a meeting with the President of the European Council Donald Tusk in Estonia. The Prime Minister pointed out the good macroeconomic indicators and noted that 2016 is the first fiscal year with a surplus since 2008. He also said that our country comes third after Estonia and Luxembourg with the lowest state debt as GDP percentage. Borissov noted the growth of the Bulgarian economy, of investments and construction in the country, the development of the business and the considerable fall in unemployment, as well as the categorical fight against smuggling.

The Prime Minister categorically stated that Bulgaria will work for achieving constructive compromises on all important issues in the European Union. “Our country will rely on an open dialogue in partnership with all member states of the Union during the Bulgarian Presidency,” highlighted the Bulgarian Prime Minister.

During the conversation with Donald Tusk, the Prime Minister clearly underlined that in respect to the policy towards the Western Balkan states he expects a clear perspective as opposed to empty promises. “Bulgaria, together with the other member states of the European Union, is a good mediator and can contribute for more closeness and understanding between the Balkans and the Union,” added Borissov.

Donald Tusk expressed full support for the priorities of Bulgaria in front of the Bulgarian Prime Minister. “Bulgaria is a leader and I see the efforts that you personally make. I will be next to you and you can count on me for everything both during the Presidency and for entering the ‘waiting room for the Eurozone’”, said the President of the European Council.

Prime Minister Boyko Borissov thanked Donald Tusk for his consent to the organization of a summit of EU leaders on the topic “Western Balkans” in Sofia during our Presidency. He expressed our country’s readiness to start talks on the preparation of the meeting with Tusk’s team and the Secretariat of the European Council, as well as with all commissioners, whose profiles are related to the topic of the politics in the Western Balkans.
