Prime Minister Boyko Borissov and His Excellency King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud launched a political dialogue between Bulgaria and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, whose aim is to develop the relations between the two countries and encourage partnerships in various fields of mutual interest. “Your visit here is a big step in the development of our relations” – those were the welcome words of the King for the Bulgarian Prime Minister. Prime Minister Borissov and his delegation were received in the royal palace in Riyadh within the framework of the first visit on such a high level in the history of diplomatic relations between the two countries that dates back to 1995.
During the meeting, the joint opinion was expressed that the realization of the common desire for the establishment of political dialogue and trust at the highest level will be supported to a large extent by the opening of a Bulgarian embassy in Riyadh. An assurance was received that the Saudi side will assist with the realization of this task within the shortest period possible.
Prime Minister Borissov and King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud discussed also the opportunities for development of the trade-economic relations. It was highlighted that those do not have a long history but what is achieved so far points to a large unused potential. The highlighted fields of particular potential include: innovations, energy, transport, tourism, science, and food security – fields where through bilateral talks new opportunities for cooperation and joint projects can be identified. The role of mediator among the business representatives from Bulgaria and Saudi Arabia can be played by a joint intergovernmental committee for economic cooperation, whose establishment is being discussed by the two states.
During their conversation Prime Minister Borissov and King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud also addressed the topic of security in the Gulf region. The Bulgarian Prime Minister expressed support for the efforts for guaranteeing the stability of the Arab states from the Gulf, which are key partners for the EU and an important factor in the fight against terrorism.
