PRIME MINISTER BORISSOV: WE ARE HAPPY WHEN IT COMES TO THOSE SAVED, BUT AT THE SAME TIME WE DEEPLY MOURN FOR THE MILLIONS OF INNOCENT VICTIMS OF THE HOLOCAUST

27.01.2020

Prime Minister Boyko Borissov arrived in Poland, where he will participate in the official ceremony marking the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the former Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp.

Together with heads of state and government from around the world, the Bulgarian Prime Minister will pay tribute to the victims of one of the darkest episodes in human history - World War II. However, in a time of total collapse for humanity, a manifestation of the highest morale of the Bulgarian people was to refuse to surrender more than 48,000 Jewish Bulgarians to the Nazi concentration camps.

"We are happy when it comes to those saved and to their descendants, we are grateful to the rescuers - known and unknown. At the same time, we are deeply mourning for the millions of innocent victims of the Holocaust and their suffering. We also pay tribute to the innocent lives of more than 11,000 Jews from Aegean and Vardar Macedonia," Prime Minister Boyko Borissov said when arriving in Poland. He was certain that we should learn from the lessons of the past, we should remember and never allow for the Holocaust memory to be erased or replaced, and our response should be a condemnation and rejection of any attempt of anti-Semitism.

Traditionally, on January 27, the world community pays tribute to the memory of those killed during the Holocaust, as well as to all the victims of the antihuman acts of this period.

This year's Auschwitz-Birkenau ceremony is of a particular importance, as its main guests will be nearly 100 Holocaust survivors. They will share their memories, experiences and remind the world of the tragedy of the Holocaust.
