PRIME MINISTER BORISSOV WAS WELCOMED AT THE TOMB OF THE UNKNOWN SOLDIER AT THE ARLINGTON NATIONAL CEMETERY WITH A 21-GUN SALUTE

25.11.2019

With a 21-gun salute Prime Minister Borissov was welcomed at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the Arlington National Cemetery, Virginia. Under the sounds of the anthems of Bulgaria and the United States Borissov laid a wreath at the Tomb.

It is one of the most important monuments of the United States, where the remains of unknown US soldiers from WWI, WWII and from the Korean War are laid.

The ceremony of the 21-gun salute performed with cannons is an honor that is only given to heads of state and government. Nearly 400 soldiers from all units of the US Armed Forces participated in the solemn part of the event.

"Here, at this place, one has the greatest recollection of how valuable peace is," Prime Minister Borissov noted. The Prime Minister and the delegation then walked around the complex. The Bulgarian Prime Minister gifted a cortic (knife) with the image of St. George to the museum of the National Cemetery Park.

Soldiers from the 3rd US Infantry Regiment ("Old Guard") guard the Tomb around the clock and perform the official ritual of "changing the guard" every hour. Monuments, memorials and trees are dedicated to the memory of individuals - astronauts, nurses, priests, war correspondents, and unknown soldiers, as well as significant events in the history of the US people.
