PRIME MINISTER BORISSOV MET WITH THE SECRETARY GENERAL OF INTERPOL JÜRGEN STOCK

20.12.2019

"We are certain of Interpol's key role in global security. With determination, we continue our active and constructive cooperation." This is what Prime Minister Boyko Borissov stated during his meeting with the Secretary General of Interpol Jürgen Stock, who is on a visit to Bulgaria on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of Bulgaria's membership renewal in Interpol.

In the course of the conversation, Prime Minister Borissov emphasized on the successful participation of our country in various projects of the International Criminal Police Organization and in the implementation of operations in important areas such as the fight against the arms and drugs trafficking, human and migrant trafficking, all among our main priorities.

The Prime Minister praised the trainings, organized and funded by the General Secretariat of Interpol, that took place in our country. Within this year, there were three trainings focusing on human trafficking in the Balkan region, on dealing with stolen weapons databases and on countering vehicle crime.

"It is particularly important to us that these trainings also include the Balkan region. As you know, cooperation with all countries in the region is a constant priority for Bulgaria," Prime Minister Borissov added. He emphasised that the exchange of information with the Western Balkans is mainly carried out through the Interpol channel and bilaterally, so it is important to strengthen contacts at all levels and in all areas of mutual interest.

"The Annual Western Balkans Resilience Forum was recently held in Sofia, during which we once more reaffirmed our support and use of every opportunity to build on the results achieved," Prime Minister Borissov told the Secretary General of Interpol Jürgen Stock.

During the meeting, Bulgaria hosting the Aqaba Process next year was also discussed, which is thematically related to Bulgaria's initiative for the development of the Western Balkans and for strengthening the international and the regional cooperation in the security sector.

Interpol celebrated last year 95 years since its creation. With its 194 Member States, the organization is now taking the second place in terms of international representation after the UN.  Bulgaria has been a member of Interpol from 1923 to 1958. Membership was renewed during the 58th session of the General Assembly of Interpol on November 27, 1989.
