PRIME MINISTER BORISSOV MET WITH THE DIRECTOR GENERAL OF THE INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATION OF VINE AND WINE PAU ROCA

Prime Minister Boyko Borissov met with the Director General of the International Organization of Vine and Wine Pau Roca. The two of them discussed the opportunities for cooperation that will contribute to even more active promotion of Bulgaria's wine-growing traditions as part of our cultural and historical heritage.

 

In the course of the talks the progressing development of the wine-growing and viticulture in Bulgaria was emphasised on, which is also confirmed by the data - 61% of all vine plantations in Bulgaria are entered in the European Register of Protected Designations of Origin and Protected Geographical Indications. This is extremely important because it enables Bulgarian producers to promote their region and to guarantee local quality. The vineyards in Bulgaria are just over 60,000 hectares and some of them are built under the measure "Restructuring and conversion of vineyards". Last year, nearly 8,500 acres of new vineyards were built.

 

During the meeting between Prime Minister Borissov and Pau Roca, the ascending trend in the export of Bulgarian wines was also highlighted. In 2019 our country has exported 64 million liters of wine to the markets of Western Europe, China, USA. Wine producers are also increasing.

 

In the presence of Prime Minister Boyko Borissov, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Forestry Desislava Taneva and Director General of the International Organization for Vine and Wine Pau Roca signed a memorandum of understanding. Its purpose is to strengthen the cooperation between the two sides in the field of viticulture, wine production, technology, marketing and other areas of mutual interest, to promote the Bulgarian wine-growing traditions, it will also provide for the exchange of new technologies and training professionals in the sector.
