PRIME MINISTER BORISSOV: IT IS A SUCCESS THAT IN THE GREEN DEAL EACH COUNTRY INDEPENDENTLY SETS ITS OWN ENERGY MIX

13.12.2019

The fact that in the Green Deal for carbon neutrality, which means zero emissions by 2050, each country sets its own energy mix is a success. This is what Prime Minister Boyko Borissov said in Brussels, where leaders are discussing climate change in the framework of the European Council. "Climate change is a fact, it happens at such a speed that the risk and the danger to humanity are substantial," Prime Minister Borissov said and noted that Europe is determined to be a leader in tackling this problem. “We have always put health and cleanliness first in our programs, we have to determine what the future of coal is and what will happen in the next 30 years," the Prime Minister added. Prime Minister Borissov emphasised the importance of providing the necessary time so that the flow of the processes will be smooth and that neither the energy mix nor the miners and other workers in the sector will be harmed. Borissov noted that Europe has to help countries regulate these processes.

Prime Minister Boyko Borissov  said he had informed EC President Ursula von der Leyen about the energy production in Bulgaria and about the plans for the coming years. The Prime Minister noted the place of nuclear energy in our energy mix, as well as the measures taken to ensure the security of the natural gas supply. Prime Minister Borissov focused on the construction of the interconnector with Greece and the implementation of the Balkan Stream project.

Asked by the media about the Mobility Package, Prime Minister Boyko Borissov said that talks were underway for taking legal action. He was certain that the discussion on this topic was not over. The Prime Minister noted that the large goods vehicles traveling around Europe would not only burden the infrastructure, but would also affect the emissions. "There are also many more details here, many more components to keep in mind. Because it turns out that many of rich countries that have pushed for green deals, have outsourced their harmful productions to China, Vietnam or other such places. The idea of imposing a tax on these emissions, on the import of such goods, is not meaningless. Because actually, if you produce something that pollutes the air in China, India or any country, and then import the product, you have not tackled the climate problems, "the Prime Minister said.

Prime Minister Borissov congratulated Boris Johnson once more on his election victory in the United Kingdom. "We have negotiated, we know what should happen by January 31st and next year will be the time for relations with the UK to be regulated. That's good news," said the Prime Minister.
