PRIME MINISTER BORISSOV IN MADRID: BULGARIA RANKS SECOND IN THE EU IN REDUCING CARBON DIOXIDE EMISSIONS

02.12.2019

"For countries with a high share of coal in their energy mix, such as Bulgaria, Poland and others, the transition to climate neutrality will require higher levels of investment and active measures in the social sphere."

This is what Prime Minister Boyko Borissov said during his speech at the 25th Madrid Climate Change Conference. Prime Minister Borissov pointed out that in Bulgaria 46% of electricity is produced from coal plants, which are the main base capacity, and in winter this percentage reaches 60. "At the same time, I would like to point out that according to the Eurostat statistics, Bulgaria is on the second place in the EU in reducing carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuels in 2018 compared to 2017, namely by 8.1%, following Portugal, which is leading with a reduction by 9%," said Prime Minister Borissov before the leaders of the World Forum in Madrid.

The Bulgarian Prime Minister emphasized that for our country nuclear energy plays an important role in guaranteeing national, regional and European energy security, while providing affordable energy and is a key element for the transition to a low-carbon economy. "Its importance as a major pillar of a carbon-free European electricity system has also been reaffirmed in the EC's long-term vision for reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, published in 2018," emphasized Prime Minister Borissov. He was certain that our country will continue to rely on nuclear energy in the future.

"EU emissions are only 9% of the global emissions. The first and second pollutants - the largest in the world - are not here. These are the United States and China," Prime Minister Boyko Borissov also said at the Conference. He noted that the EU is reducing its emissions and added that the health and quality of life of every citizen in the world should be put first in this regard. "Because whether chimneys smoke in the US, China, or Vietnam, the atmosphere brings it to us. Let us unite and together bring these indisputably economically progressive countries to take into account the monster that comes with climate change," Prime Minister Borissov concluded.
