02.07.2019

“We have a President of the European Council – Charles Michel. A very good friend of Bulgaria,” said Prime Minister Boyko Borissov after the end of the extraordinary meeting of the European Council. Prime Minister Borissov congratulated Charles Michel and noted, that the tradition of a Belgian Prime Minister to lead the Council dates back to the time of Herman Van Rompuy.

The Bulgarian Prime Minister said that he is satisfied with the difficult compromise reached at the meeting of the European heads of state and government. “In the package we determine what is for the socialists, what is for the European People’s Party, and what is for the liberals and we agree on it. We certainly wanted from the first day on the European Commission to be given to the EPP and this is what we achieved,” added Borissov.

When asked about the position of a President of the European Commission, Prime Minister Borissov underlined that the proposal is for the German Defense Minister  – Ursula von der Leyen, to take said position. “We have known each other for a long time, and I think that she will do well,” noted Borissov. The Prime Minister also said that the proposal for the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy is the Spanish Foreign Minister Josep Borrell.

Asked if the GERB MPs  would support Sergei Stanishev for a President of the European Parliament, Prime Minister Borissov said: “We will definitely support him. A Bulgarian on such a high position brings only honor and pride. It doesn’t matter if his people in Bulgaria do not like him.” Borissov emphasized on the fact that promoting Sergei Stanishev’ candidacy is a job of the European Parliament.

“We are well acquainted, he is our friend and I am certain that such a professional will be really important for our way to the Eurozone,”  also underlined the Prime Minister regarding Christine Lagarde, nominated as a President of the European Central Bank.
