03.09.2019

Germany is our strategic partner in the EU and a close associate in NATO. This was stated by Prime Minister Boyko Borissov during a session of the Christian Social Union Group (CSU) in the Bundestag, which is being held in Berlin.

Prime Minister Borissov put an emphasis on the constructive cooperation between the two countries, which is characterized by years-long traditions and excellent prospects, as this year marks the 140th anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic relations.

"Bulgaria and Germany are developing dynamic cooperation in all areas - politics, security, economy and trade, tourism, education, science and culture," Borissov said to the representatives of the German Bundestag. He noted that there is an exceptionally strong political dialogue at all levels, which is the basis for successfully tackling the common challenges not only for both states but also at the European level.

In his speech, the Bulgarian Prime Minister also emphasized on current EU issues.

"Bulgaria is an active and consistent supporter of the European prospective of the Western Balkan countries. During our Presidency of the EU Council, we have made great efforts to bring the issue back to the EU agenda, because integrating the region with the Union is a strategic investment in the peace, democracy, prosperity, security and stability of Europe, "Prime Minister Borissov said.

He noted that the recognition of Bulgaria's positive contribution to the European path of the Western Balkans is the delegation of the responsibility for our country to chair the Berlin Process. "The first ever joint Presidency of the Process with the Republic of Northern Macedonia is an act of recognition for the achieved historic Bilateral Agreement between our two countries, which is a positive example of good neighborly relations," also said Prime Minister Borissov.

In his speech to the representatives of the CSU, Prime Minister Borissov also referred to the Multiannual Financial Framework for the period 2021-2027 and the need for an efficient allocation of resources between the different EU priorities.

As an external border, Bulgaria is well aware of the need for provision of sufficient resources for the new priorities, especially in the areas of migration, security, and defense," Prime Minister Borissov added. He underlined that it is equally important for the EU budget to invest in growth, jobs, competitiveness and convergence, which means a better life for all European citizens.

During his speech, Prime Minister Boyko Borissov also addressed the EU's security and unity, as well as the issues of the next institutional cycle.

"Bulgaria welcomes the election of Mrs. Ursula von der Leyen as EC President. Personally, I, as Prime Minister, have made a lot of efforts to support her candidacy and I can say that we are extremely pleased with the result - a member of the European People's Party becomes the first woman President of the European Commission as well, ”Prime Minister Boyko Borissov said.
