PRIME MINISTER BORISSOV: DIPLOMACY CAN RESOLVE ALL CONFLICTS IN THE PROXIMITY OF BULGARIA

01.10.2020

“I thank the European Commission for the exceptionally fair report which has taken into account Bulgaria’s progress and has described well what we need to do to perform excellently,” said Prime Minister Boyko Borissov in Brussels before the opening of the Special European Council. Mr. Borissov stressed that Bulgaria would comply with the Venice Commission’s recommendations so as to meet its commitments under the monitoring that is valid for all EU countries.

Prime Minister Borissov expressed confidence that adequate decisions would be taken within the European Council in response to ongoing developments in Europe and in the world. “Bulgaria’s geostrategic location makes it extremely exposed to the conflicts around us. Azerbaijan-Armenia relations are very important for this region. We insist on an immediate ceasefire as we maintain exceptionally friendly relations with both countries that are important for our trade,” Bulgaria’s Prime Minister said. Mr. Borissov pointed out that Bulgaria is strongly against the involvement of third parties into the conflict.

The Prime Minister expressed a hope that dialog and negotiations would be the basis on which the decisions needed would be taken to normalize the situation in the Eastern Mediterranean. The Prime Minister noted that diplomacy could resolve all conflicts in the proximity of Bulgaria. “Therefore, I believe that the European Union acted very rightly in holding consultations. I thank Charles Michel, I thank the German Presidency with Chancellor Merkel for the real conciliation of our region,” Prime Minister Borissov pointed out.
