PRIME MINISTER BORISSOV ASSURES MOLDOVA’S PRESIDENT SANDU: BULGARIA SUPPORTS MOLDOVA’S EUROPEAN INTEGRATION

28.01.2021

“Bulgaria strongly supports Moldova’s European integration and stands ready to offer its experience and practical knowhow in upgrading that country’s relations with the EU.” This was stated by Prime Minister Boyko Borissov when he spoke over phone with Maia Sandu who assumed office as President of Moldova last December. That was the first telephone communication between the two leaders.

Prime Minister Borissov stressed that Bulgaria has always been a friend and partner of Moldova and that it will continue to lend firm support to the Moldovan authorities in their aspirations to the European Union. For its part, Moldova should step up its efforts to join the EU. “Bulgaria is willing to offer Moldova any assistance to strengthen democratic values and we encourage you to move forward to the goal,” Bulgaria’s Prime Minister said. Mr. Borissov emphasized that Moldova is also our important partner in the EU Eastern Partnership initiative that aspires to achieve the closest possible political association and the highest possible extent of economic integration.

Prime Minister Borissov brought into focus the large Bulgarian community in Moldova, which is equally important for the excellent relations between the peoples of the two countries. Mr. Borissov appreciated the Moldovan authorities’ effort to save the national, cultural and language identity of the Bulgarian national minority. In that context, Prime Minister Borissov noted that the transformation of the Taraclia State University named after Gregory Tsamblak into a branch of the “Angel Kanchev” University of Rousse would further contribute to the cultural and spiritual closeness of the two peoples.

Prime Minister Boyko Borissov expressed the desire of Bulgaria to offer grants for the implementation of projects that are seen as a priority by both countries such as the improvement of the socio-economic wellbeing of the population in Taraclia region and in support of the Moldovan Government’s effort to tackle the COVID-19 pandemic.

Bulgaria’s Prime Minister and Moldova’s President expressed satisfaction with the vigorous bilateral political dialog in recent years. They agreed unanimously on the need to intensify commercial and economic relations.

Prime Minister Boyko Borissov invited Moldova’s President Maia Sandu to visit Bulgaria at her convenience.
