Kozloduy NPP – a new reactor in 2033

25.10.2023

Unit 7 of the Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) will be in place in 2033. The construction procedure was launched today following a decision of the cabinet. To that end, the capital of Kozloduy NPP – New Capacities EAD will be increased by BGN 500 million.

The cabinet assigned the Minister of Energy Rumen Radev the task to proceed with a transparent selection of a contractor to design, build and put into operation the new unit. The terms and conditions of the final contract with the selected company and with the supplier of the АР1000 technology must provide for a fixed price and date of completion. The cabinet mandated the Minister of Energy to organize negotiations with financial institutions to procure the needed loans.

The same government decision will give the start of the preparations for the construction of Unit 8 of the Kozloduy NPP. The construction operations of the two new power units must run in parallel, as per the plan, and Unit 8 must be completed within two to three years after Unit 7.

Prime Minister Acad. Nikolai Denkov called the cabinet’s decision of today one of the major decisions to be taken by the cabinet during its term in office. “The total capacity of the future Unit 7 and Unit 8 is 2,300 MW, which significantly exceeds the capacity of 1,760 MW of the decommissioned Unit 1, Unit 2, Unit 3 and Unit 4 of the Kozloduy NPP,” said the Prime Minister before the opening of the cabinet day.

Acad. Nikolai Denkov drew attention to the fact that the technology chosen for these reactors is unique in the world: „The technology allows changing the operating power of the reactors twice within a very short period of time, and this is extremely important for the stable management of the energy system.”
