20.10.2017

European funding will be sought for the construction of the railway connection between Bulgaria and Greece. This became clear after the meeting of Prime Minister Boyko Borissov with the EC President Jean-Claude Juncker and the Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras. The three held talks in Brussels within the framework of the European Council meeting. According to Prime Minister Borissov the project signed in Kavala “Thessaloniki-Kavala-Alexandropoulis-Burgas-Varna-Ruse” is of strategic importance not only for the two countries but also for the development of the region as a whole. The Bulgarian Prime Minister also noted the progress in the work on the interconnector with Greece.

Another topic of the meeting was the security of the Western Balkans and the European perspective for the countries of the region. The results were presented from the quadrilateral Balkan meeting in “Evksinograd”, whereby Prime Minister Borissov welcomed the prime ministers of Greece and Romania – Alexis Tsipras and Mihai Tudose, as well as the Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic.

Prime Minister Boyko Borissov said that he is extremely satisfied with the constructive dialogue with his colleagues from the region. He underlined the need to develop the relations among the states on the Balkans in way that will guarantee peace, stability, and prosperity in this part of Europe. According to him, Bulgaria can have its substantial contribution in this respect, also thanks to the upcoming Presidency of the Council of the EU. Borissov added that he shares the desire of the Greek Prime Minister for the Bulgarian Presidency to be a Balkan Presidency in order to encourage the discussion about the need for a strong commitment of the EU to the region.

Prime Minister Borissov confirmed that our country relies on the support of the European Commission for successfully implementing its priorities during the Presidency in the first six months of next year. He was categorical that this will bring benefits for the whole EU.
