BULGARIA IS READY TO JOIN THE EUROPEAN INITIATIVE TO PROVIDE A VACCINE FOR COVID-19

14.06.2020

Prime Minister Boyko Borissov ordered the Minister of Health Kiril Ananiev to take all necessary actions for the inclusion of Bulgaria in the European initiative to provide a vaccine for COVID-19 with equal access for the population of all EU member states. Prime Minister Borissov is certain that the best solution should be sought for Bulgarian citizens who wish to take advantage of the new vaccine and to have guarantees for the quality, safety and effectiveness of the vaccine when it is approved by regulatory authorities.

On Friday during a video conference of the European health ministers, Minister Ananiev stated the readiness of our country to participate in the efforts to provide a vaccine for COVID-19, noting that there are still many details that should be discussed in depth between the EC and the Member States.

At this stage, Bulgaria is considering various options regarding the provision of a vaccine. Our country is ready to join the formed alliance of four European countries - Germany, France, Italy and the Netherlands, which have reached an agreement with a biopharmaceutical company for the supply of up to 400 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine from the University of Oxford. Our country is also considering the possibility of joining a pan-European solution of the issue, which will provide quantities of the vaccine for the whole EU. Bulgaria can also express interest in the vaccine in direct negotiations with the company organizing its production and distribution.
