BORISSOV TO RAMA: AS PRESIDENT OF THE COUNCIL OF THE EU, WE WILL SUPPORT THE EFFORTS OF ALBANIA TO START THE NEGOTIATION PROCESS FOR MEMBERSHIP IN THE UNION

06.12.2017

Bulgarian and Albanian Prime Ministers Boyko Borissov and Edi Rama held a working meeting a day before the conference, organized by the Bulgarian government and the World Bank in support of the Euro-Atlantic integration and infrastructure connectivity of the Western Balkan countries. Borissov and Rama discussed the development of bilateral relations, highlighting their excellent condition at the political level, as well as the potential for deepening trade and economic contacts.

Prime Minister Boyko Borissov pointed out that as President of the EU Council, Bulgaria will support Albania's efforts to join the EU. “We will continue to work closely with your government to support the process of reform in different spheres. Albania can make the necessary progress to create the conditions for a decision to start accession negotiations,” he said.

The two agreed on the notion that regional cooperation plays an important role in strengthening the stability and development in the region. As a priority in this regard, the construction of Corridor 8, which connects the Adriatic Sea and the Black Sea, was pointed out.

Prime Minister Borissov thanked his Albanian counterpart once again for the inclusion of the Bulgarian minority in the Law on the Protection of National Minorities in Albania - an act he described as a manifestation of a European approach and political maturity.

Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama expressed gratitude for the humanitarian aid provided by Bulgaria for the flood victims that was sent this morning to Tirana. "Bulgaria reacted with an immediate delivery of the most necessary for the people to deal with the disaster, tomorrow a third flight to Tirana is planned to make the next delivery," Borissov said.
