I expect that what has been agreed should be respected and, therefore, I will remind my colleagues of the commitments made on 18 July 2022 and of the roadmap for the EU accession of the Republic of North Macedonia. This was stated by Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev as he spoke to journalists in Brussels prior to the opening of today’s European Council meeting. To respond to statements coming from the Republic of North Macedonia and asserting that no amendments to the Constitution would be made, Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev recalled further that the conclusions of the December 2023 Council are even more specific and with a focus precisely on the amendments to the Constitution of the Republic of North Macedonia. “I will inform colleagues from the European Council what the attitude is so that we remember what was approved on that point,” Mr. Glavchev said further. The Prime Minister emphasized that Bulgaria’s position on the Republic of North Macedonia is Europe’s position.
As to the upcoming discussions in Brussels about the election of the new heads of the major European institutions, Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev pointed out that this is a procedural modality and that it is too early to discuss the nomination of a European Commissioner from Bulgaria. First, the President of the European Commission is to be elected and the earliest date of the election is 17 July and it is from that date onwards that we may discuss the ambitions of anyone else, Bulgaria included, Mr. Glavchev stressed. The Prime Minister expressed his hope for a regular Bulgarian government in office with a full range of functions. “Bulgaria needs a stable regular government. It will be best to have it elected with the first designation as this will shorten the process of the election of a government,” Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev said further.
