PRIME MINISTER BOYKO BORISSOV MEETS VLADO BUČKOVSKI, SPECIAL ENVOY FOR BULGARIA OF THE GOVERNMENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF NORTH MACEDONIA

10.12.2020

“I have always believed that solutions could be found at the negotiating table. Today’s and tomorrow’s generations won’t forgive Bulgaria nor will they forgive the Republic of North Macedonia for the failure to work out a compromise that would give a prospect.” This was stated by Prime Minister Boyko Borissov at his meeting earlier today with Vlado Bučkovski, Special Envoy for Bulgaria of the Government of the Republic of North Macedonia.

In the understanding of the Prime Minister to find a sustainable and lasting solution to the pending outstanding problems in bilateral relations, we need a pragmatic, honest and well-intentioned approach. Prime Minister Boyko Borissov noted that for relations of mutual trust it would be needed to come back to the strict and irreversible fulfilment of all commitments made under the Treaty of Friendship, Good Neighborliness and Cooperation that was signed in 2017.

“Bulgaria remains always committed to the Euro-Atlantic values; therefore, during our Presidency of the Council of the EU we put the European perspective of the Western Balkans on the top of the agenda,” Prime Minister Borissov said. The Prime Minister was firm that so far Bulgaria had made every effort to integrate the countries in the Western Balkans into NATO and the EU. In that context, Mr. Borissov recalled that it was owing to Bulgaria’s support for the European future of the Republic of North Macedonia that the Treaty of Friendship, Good Neighborliness and Cooperation was signed.
