Bulgaria shows interest to join as a co-shareholder the initiative to create a “green” corridor to transport “green” energy generated in Azerbaijan to Europe. This was stated by Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev at his meeting with Azerbaijan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Jeyhun Bayramov in Berlin. Minister of Energy Vladimir Malinov attended the meeting in Berlin. Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev reiterated Bulgaria’s support for the initiative to which Georgia, Hungary and Romania contribute, along with Azerbaijan. It is yet to be decided which state-owned company will join the initiative to represent Bulgaria.
The meeting discussed, inter alia, the Vertical Gas Corridor for the construction of which two main contracts were signed in Sofia a week ago, with Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev and Energy Minister Vladimir Malinov attending the signing ceremony. Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev noted that the project would proceed within the framework of the strategic declaration that was signed by Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev and Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, to increase the quantities of natural gas to be supplied to the European markets from 2027 onwards. This will replace Russian gas supplies. Further, the project will strengthen Bulgaria’s position on the gas map and serve as the main corridor to transport Azeri natural gas in the south-north direction to the Central European markets.
The meeting discussed, among other things, the upcoming session of the Bulgarian-Azerbaijani Intergovernmental Commission for Economic Cooperation in Baku in early July. In the past five years, the Commission did not have any meetings and the upcoming session is expected to further promote bilateral cooperation.
