Prime Minister Acad. Nikolai Denkov invites Korean business to invest in coalmining regions

28.08.2023

Prime Minister Acad. Nikolai Denkov invited the Korean business to the three coalmining regions that were worst affected by the energy transition. Stara Zagora, Kyustendil and Pernik offer good infrastructure; they are near the capital city and need new investment and new jobs to replace the jobs that will be lost when the coal-fired plants and the mines close, said the Prime Minister at his talk with Park Jin, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea within the 18th Bled Strategic Forum, Slovenia.

Bulgaria hopes to attract investor interest from Korea for the concession of Plovdiv Airport whose potential is not fully utilized currently. The idea is to make it a robust cargo airport due to its strategic location near Sofia. Bulgaria has the capacity to become a logistic hub for Eastern Europe, Acad. Nikolai Denkov emphasized.

The Prime Minister offered to Korea cooperation in areas like the production of batteries for electricity storage, assembly of electric vehicles (EVs), high-tech hydropower systems and in agriculture. He described the opportunities for joint projects with the INSAIT, one of the world leaders in the field of artificial intelligence.

Korea’s Foreign Minister was impressed by Bulgaria’s ideas for partnership between the two countries and promised assistance for their advancement. He appealed to the Bulgarian government to support the application of the Korean city of Busan to host the World Expo 2030. At the beginning of February 2023 the caretaker government took a decision to support Riyadh.
