PRIME MINISTER BORISSOV SPEAKS OVER PHONE WITH AZERBAIJAN’S PRESIDENT ILHAM ALIYEV

01.01.2021

It is an impressive day in Bulgarian-Azerbaijani bilateral relations. We are taking an important step in the energy diversification of Bulgaria and of Europe alike. Prime Minister Boyko Borissov and Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev agreed on this. They spoke over phone after the visit earlier today by Prime Minister Borissov and Azerbaijan’s Ambassador to Bulgaria Nargiz Gurbanova to the Petrich Compressor Station that received the first quantities of natural gas as pumped from Azerbaijan to Bulgaria. The diversification was made possible owing to the good top-level dialog between Prime Minister Borissov and President Aliyev.

Prime Minister Boyko Borissov pointed out that the Azerbaijani gas gives Bulgaria full diversification in terms of both source and route. What Prime Minister Borissov and President Aliyev achieved affords a real chance for energy diversification to neighbor countries as well. Mr. Borissov underlined the work done by the Bulgarian Government in the energy sector. The Prime Minister said he was confident that Bulgaria and Azerbaijan have the potential to promote their trade and energy cooperation so that more Azerbaijani gas could be carried to the region and to Europe alike.

Prime Minister Borissov and President Aliyev wished each other a Happy New Year. Prime Minister Boyko Borissov mentioned the excellent Bulgaria-Azerbaijan cooperation at all levels with a special emphasis on the importance of interaction in the field of culture. In response to Prime Minister Borissov’s invitation to Mr. Aliyev to visit Bulgaria early in 2021 and see for himself the modernized compressor stations, the President of Azerbaijan assured him that he would be glad to pay the visit at the earliest opportunity.
